Its estimated that over 600 Million Microsoft Internet Explorer users world wide and about half of the UK population are at risk to hacking attacks because the latest security patches and updates have not been applied to their computers.
Any one unsure if their version of IE is up to date should head to the Windows Update website and follow the on screen instructions. Or better still get Mozilla Firefox 3 instead.
Today the fight to be top browser lies between Microsoft's Internet Explorer with roughly a 70% market share and Mozilla's Firefox with a 20% market share. It will probably come as a surprise to most of the 600 Million IE users that they could substantially reduce the risk in web browsing by simply downloading and installing and using Firefox as their default browser.
Firefox 3 recently launched and broke all download records with over 8 million people downloading it in the first 24 hours of its launch.
Researchers have found the IE users are the worst at keeping their browser up to date with around half its users still to upgrade from version 6 to 7. Firefox users on the other hand were found to be the best at keeping up to date due to the robust automatic update system that Mozilla uses in Firefox. Researchers are also recommending "best before" dates to encourage users to look for browser updates more frequently. In our view IE 6 is well past its use by date.
If you want to be web savvy and keep safe on-line head over to www.mozilla.com/firefox/ and give it a test drive. The download is small and installation takes minutes not hours.
